Session 2: Lay Minister Training
Fijian-Speaking Parishes, Suva-Ovalau Archdeaconry
The second session of Lay Minister training for Fijian-speaking parishes emphasized the sacred act of worship and its preparatory elements. It provided practical and spiritual insights that ground liturgical practices in reverence and order, drawing us closer to the divine through meticulous care and understanding of worship settings. The training emphasized the importance of cleanliness and attentiveness to detail when preparing the altar, which reflects the sacredness of the space we invite God into. Cleaning the vessels and maintaining the sanctity of the church environment were highlighted as vital acts of worship themselves.
The training also explored the biblical and theological foundations of worship, reminding us that worship is not just a ritual but a response to God's call to His people. Through biblical teachings, we were encouraged to view worship as both personal and communal, a bridge between the divine and human experience. Each vessel, item, and movement in worship carries deep theological significance that connects us to the history of the Church and our responsibility as leaders to uphold this tradition.
Familiarization with the tools and resources used in worship was key, as it heightened our reverence for these objects and enhanced our ability to explain their meaning to congregants, enriching the entire community's worship experience. As we transitioned into leadership roles in worship, we learned that preparation extends beyond setting the stage physically, emphasizing the importance of internal spiritual preparation. As lay ministers, we are called to embody a sense of reverence and care in every element of worship preparation, helping our parishes encounter God in all His fullness.
