History of the School Site

In 1963 the Trustees of the church of England acquired Miss Free’s properties on both sides of the road extending from # 2 to #8 Des voeux Road (Des Voeux Towers to the former Bishops office.) for £30,000.00. Over the next five years, donations were collected from overseas, in particular from dioceses in New Zealand for the Anglican Church’s St. John the Baptist college for training for the Ministry which took over the St. Lawrence Hotel building, modifying it and adding concrete floors at the front and rear of the building.

The house that now stands in the area that was the St. Lawrence Gardens was built by Bishop Bryce to be the Bishops’ residence but was found to be too small and it became the office and library of the College.
