Reimagine Theological Education Through an Indigenous Lens

From March 2–4, 2025, the Anglican Seminary Deans Network convened at St John’s Theological College in Auckland for a transformative gathering focused on reshaping theological education through an indigenous lens.

Hosted by The Reverend Dr Hirini Kaa, the meeting brought together theological leaders from across East Asia and Oceania to explore ways to ensure seminaries reflect indigenous identities, cultures, and traditions.

A key voice in the discussion, The Reverend Canon Stephen Spencer from the Anglican Communion Office, emphasized the importance of structural change:

“A recurring theme of our meeting was the need for theological colleges to disrupt colonial structures and attitudes that persist in Anglican education. Indigenisation is not just about content, but also about ensuring that indigenous staff and students shape the life of the institution.”

The discussions delved into how seminaries can cultivate locally rooted theological education, recognizing the diverse linguistic and cultural contexts of their communities. Delegates also visited significant Māori historical sites, reflecting on the power of symbols and worship in decolonising theological education.

This gathering marked a significant step toward a more inclusive, indigenous-centred approach to Anglican theological education, fostering deeper conversations and commitments to change.
