A Bold Step Forward: Indigenous Chapter Confirmed Following Compass Rose Society Pilgrimage

We’re thrilled to share an exciting outcome from the Compass Rose Society’s pilgrimage to our province in February this year. In a significant and long-anticipated move, Archbishop Don Tamihere and Bishop Daniel Gutiérrez, President of the Compass Rose Society, have confirmed the establishment of an Indigenous Chapter within the Society.

This moment marks a powerful step forward—one that acknowledges the vital role of Indigenous leadership and spirituality within the Anglican Communion. By creating space for Māori and Pasefika voices to be more fully heard, this chapter strengthens the global Church’s commitment to justice, partnership, and the wisdom of Indigenous peoples.

The decision emerged following a deeply meaningful pilgrimage that wove through our whenua and moana, connecting hearts and deepening mutual understanding. The journey was not only spiritual but also relational, and its fruits will shape the future of our shared mission across the Communion.
